Psyko Carbon PC 5.1 Surround Sound Gaming Headset Review

I have been gaming for a while now. I have owned the Astro A40 2011 edition, the Tritton AX Pro and the Turtle Beach PX5. The A40 was supposed to be, in theory, the best headset out there. While it beat the PX5's easily in terms of sound quality ( due to the PX5's 2.4Ghz frequency) and the pro's, it could not beat the Ax pro's in 3D audio positioning. After being dissapointed, it was time for me to go back online to look up a good headset, as I had to send the pro's and PX5's back because they just did not make the cut. I found a company called Psyko Audio. Since I really do not like startup compaines, I thought this was a waste of time after I heard of it. My thoughts changed as I read they won CES Most Innovative award, an award not to be given out so easily. After learning this, I decided to buy the Carbon's (Updated Psyko 5.1 from 2009.)

The Old Way:

Now I am going to use the Turtle Beach HPA2's for example to explain how traditional 5.1 is achieved. Traditional 5.1 headset's put multiple drivers in your ear. This is done to recreate True 5.1 sound. Out of all the headset's that have this configuration (Tritton AX Pros, Vibras, CoolerMaster 5.1) the HPA2 did it better than any other, and thankfully I still have it. The reason having multiple drivers works half the time is because all four drivers are shooting sound in to your ears. The HPA2 solved this problem to an extent. While the drivers are still in the earcups, they are arranged in a way that the sound is not, or barely distorted.

On to the Psyko Way:

Instead of having the drivers in the ear, they are actually placed in the top of the headband or "bridge." The sound is then passed down through these objects called "waveguides" into your ear. They also claim this does the "pinna effect" well, the effect in which sound is passed into your ear in a natural way as well as the way humans preceive sound. The idea is to depart from old techniques and try to recreate a true 5.1 home theatre setup (center, left and right front, left and right rear). Subwoofers do not really matter since that is just for the bass effect and humans really do not detect low frequencies as much or as well. Now, I never had the original, but I did try it thanks to a friend, and although the directionallity was better than the HPA2's, the sound was on the same level than the HPA2's, and the price tag was $300. I brought the carbon to see if it could correct the mistakes of the orginal. I was happy to hear the drivers were upgraded, but the question is, does it perform well, or even better than the HPA2's?

The Good:

That answer is a outstanding yes. This headset far surpasses any other True 5.1 headset in terms of audio positioning in gaming. In all the games I have tested it in (COD:MW3, BF3, Halo Reach, COD:Black Ops, Homefront, Killzone 3, and Crysis 2), the psyko carbon's exceeded my expectations. By using the Tritton sound control unit, I could easily hook it up to my Xbox 360 or PS3, with a few modifications. Back to the review, as far as music and movies go, again they surpass any other True 5.1 headset. The Turltle Beach HPA2 ,in terms of gaming, movies and music in its true 5.1 category, was in my opinion, "The rare true 5.1 setup that got it right." However, Psyko has changed my thoughts otherwise. You will benefit more from the 5.1 setup from Psyko, as the way the True 5.1 signal in the Carbon's is more natrual than the traditional setup, making the Carbon's the new "Beast of the Battlefield". Also, for those thinking Headsets powered by Dolby Headphone can take these on in gaming, throw that notion into the water. True 5.1 is much superior to Dolby Headphone for gaming, and when stacked up against the Astro 2011 edition, the Carbon's delivered far better than the A40's.
Although the carbon's do not have swiveling earcups, they do have a side door system. You can pop open the earcups on the side to air out heat for long gaming sessions. As far as comfort goes, they are very good, but they are a bit heavy due to the drivers being in the bridge of the headset, but thankfully, there is a good amount of padding on the top so some of the pressure will be taken off.

On to the Bad:

One complaint I have is that while it can beat every other true 5.1 headset in terms of audio positioning, movies and music, headsets with dolby headphone or good stero headsets beat these in movies and music easily, especially the Astro A40's or Sennheiser PC 350's. However, these are Gaming Only headphones. You can listen to music and movies in them, but they were bulit for gaming, and just gaming. Another complaint was the microphone. It is outstanding, but it picks up other background noise. For some, the weight also could be the selling point. As I said before, these are heavy headphones, and they do fit tight around your head. If you put a book between each ear cup, some pressure should be taken off.

Final Verdict:

My final thoughts are this is a very outstanding headset. While it may not beat the A40 in versatility, sounds for music or movies, it more than makes up for it as in my opinion, the best true 5.1 surround sound headset of 2011, bar none.
I give this headset a 4.5 out of 5 stars rating.

Psyko Audio has done away with a recurring problem, and they did it the hard way. It has delivered sound correctly for true 5.1 gaming headphones. Psyko had solved the problem where so many others in its class have failed.
