I needed to add a lot of storage to a server, and an array like the one already on the server was no longer available new and a used one was still more than management wanted to pay. I found the AMS Venus T5C, but found they didn't promise it to work with disks larger than 2TB. I was about to buy a Drobo, but started reading reviews complaining about speed. Then I discovered this. For less than the SAS array, we got two of these plus 3TB drives to fill them. They even came with the USB 3.0 cards, though I had to buy PCI ones anyway--one server had a PCI Express slot but it was filled, the other had none.

RAID (or JBOD) setup was easy with the controls on the front, so I haven't needed to install the software, or puzzle through the little rotary settings on the back. One is set up as spanning, and shows up as 13.6TB, the other RAID 5 shows up as 10.9TB. And installing disks was easy, though required screws with really low-profile heads and none were supplied. Apparently besides the usual RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10, and the JBOD arrangements of spanning or separate disks, it does RAID 3. And I was pleased that both didn't complain a bit when moved from the onboard USB 2.0 ports to the add-in USB 3.0 ones.

Subsequently I have seen a post to a forum confirming that the the Venus T5C will work with 3TB disks. The fact that the manufacturer doesn't support that and the complaints about problems with its USB 3.0 compatibility and units received DOA make me happy to have these, though more expensive. And at the same time the lower cost and probably better performance I think make these a better fit for my use than the Drobo units. Although the Drobo lets you use different sized disks and add disks to an active array, these let you get the full disk capacity with spanning or RAID 0 or complete redundancy with RAID 1. And with easy availability of 3TB and 4TB disks, all these things mean something approaching 20TB isn't just horribly expensive.

And on one of the servers, I moved the array from USB 3.0 to eSATA. As the RAID functions are in the RAIDBank device, that also had no affect on the data stored there.
