Product Description
Unlike the traditional SSD, Velox V70 features optimized firmware and advanced Toggle/Synchronous NAND flash while utilizing the latest SandForce SF-2281 controller. The result is an extraordinary SSD that extends the performance limits to 557 MB/s in read speed and 500 MB/s in write speed with maximum random 4k write speeds as high as 86,000 IOPS. For uncompressed files, the read speed can reach up to 500 MB per second. With faster computer startup time and application launch time, V70 can greatly change your SSD experience and is ideal for professional users for video & audio editing, gaming and multiple tasking. Silicon Power Velox V70 has a brushed aluminum enclosure which comes in metallic gold. It employs the highest spec SATA III 6 GBps interface on the market, while remaining backwards compatible with the SATA II GBps interface. Running at over double the efficiency of the SATA II interface, the V70 offers a better performance boost and more durability and stability. Weighing less than 77 gram (0.17 lbs), the Velox V70 is slim, light and generates less heat and noise, making it an ideal solution for notebook users on the go.Silicon Power Velox V70 120GB SATA 6.0 Gb/s 2.5 inch Synchronous Flash Solid State Drive (SSD) SP120GBSS3V70S25 Review
I have the Silicon Power Velox V70 120GB SSD installed in my Home-Theater/Gaming PC as the boot drive. A fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit was uneventful and completed rapidly. The SSD did need a quick format (7 sec.) at the "drive options" point in the install before Windows would allow the OS to be installed to it. The SSD boots Windows 7 Ultimate in about 20 seconds. I have a minimum of programs installed so as to keep the SSD as empty as possible. The SP V70 came with a refined looking black metal 2.5" to 3.5" adapter. The drive itself has a brushed aluminum top and plastic bottom as is common for SSDs these days. Amazon packaged the SSD well, and the SP V70 is also boxed nicely.The Silicon Power Velox V70 uses 25nm Intel Synchronous Flash. It is not actual "toggle NAND" as claimed in the product description according to several tech websites. The V70 uses the ubiquitous and very good LSI/Sandforce 2281 Controller with its latest firmware. Silicon Power's latest firmware as of July 2013 is 5.06. Many SSDs use the Sandforce controller, and it is for a reason- it's very good. On Tweaktown the SP V70 tested on par if not better than the best SSDs from OCZ, SanDisk, Intel and Plextor on Crystal Disk Mark 3.0. SSDs using other controllers like Phison's are also quite good too which makes a point. The vast majority of SSDs available now perform quite well so price can be a deciding factor in choosing one.
PROTECTING AN SSD FROM PERFORMANCE DEGRADATION:
Once I installed Windows, I immediately opened up a command prompt and enabled TRIM support. If you do not enable TRIM support you will quickly see your fast new SSD become progressively more and more sluggish to a point where it is not much faster than a regular hard drive. To enable TRIM open up a command prompt window as Administrator and type the following:
"fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0"
To be sure TRIM support is enabled type the following command prompt:
"fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify"
The next command line should respond with the following after both of the above are typed:
"DisableDeleteNotify=0"
TRIM in Windows helps to keep the SSD healthy. TRIM allows the OS to "inform a solid-state drive (SSD) which blocks of data are no longer considered in use and can be wiped internally". If not, the SSD will keep writing new data to new cells til they're all full. Then it has a very slow time of going back and clearing cells so more data can be written.
In addition, this is why you should never do a "long format" of an SSD. The quick one-time format during the install of Windows 7 is o.k. It is also why it is not a good idea to fill an SSD all the way up to near its capacity.
