Skytex Imagine 10, ST1012, 10.1-Inch, Android 4.1, 1280x800, Dual Core, 16GB, 1GB RAM, Bluetooth, HDMI, Micro-SD Slot, 20 Hour Extended Battery, Dual Cameras Review

I have had this tablet for a couple of weeks and have really wanted to put it through it's paces rather than a first impressions review. When I do first impressions I usually do not change my mind, but occasionally you do find an issue or two after a couple of weeks. Rarely are they anything to change the rating, most usually software issues and the like.

What is in the box.

The ST1012 comes with your standard accessories - ear phones, charger, and USB cable. Skytex now also includes an OTG adapter which is a nice addition and is becoming standard now.

The ST1012 is a much sleeker tablet. A nice thin form factor. All of your connections are on the left hand side now with the power button on the top left side, then the back and volume on the top left. They chose to go with the micro USB instead of mini , but left the mini HDMI which means not having to buy an additional new cable if you do use your tablets for watching movies over HDMI. There are front facing speaker on either side near the top, very nice placement as your hand and fingers do not block them. Sound quality is good, volume is about what is to be expected, but with a video player like MX with software audio decoding it becomes very good.

Here are the basic specs:

Display - 10.1" 1280 x 800 IPS Capacitive Touchscreen Display
CPU - Rockchip 3066 Cortex-A9 1.6 GHz Dual-Core Processor + Mali 400MP GPU
OS - ICS with JellyB Coming - (I have already made a Custom Jelly Bean and ICS ROM for it.)
Memory/Storage - 1GB RAM, 16GB internal
Connectivity - WiFi B/G/N with Bluetooth
I/O - MicorSD expandable to 32GB ( I have use a 64GB with no issue, but stated spec is 32GB). Micro USB 2.0 (OTG), 3.5mm headphone jack.
Dimensions - 0.1" W x 6.7" H x 0.4" D 1.3 LBS

Power up the tablet and you will get to a cusomized GO HD launcher scree. Very nicely configured for the end user. Skytex now uses their own App Store with tablet optimized Apps. They still include 1Mobile market and Cloudlink with 5Gb of free cloud storage. They also have inluded a ton of "Get" links for many popular apps and games making it very easy for a novice user to get them without having to access any market apps.

Performance

This is where I have been most happy. Having recently got my hands on the Excite 10 LE, and the Excite 10 Tegra 3 Quad Core, I really was expecting to do side by side comparisons with the LE. Unfortunately "That dog don't hunt!". The LE with the TI OMAP Dual Core 4430 is a dog. It benches closer to a single core A8 with scores like 5900 on Antutu and 1800 on Quadrant, shameful.

But the ST1012 with the Rockchip Cortex-A9 Dual Core holds it's own pretty well against the Quad Core Tegra 3 in the Excite 10.

Imagine 10 Benchmark Scores:

Quadrant 4092
Antutu 12067

Excite 10 Benchmark Scores:

Quadrant 4606
Antutu 13293

When you look at these scores and remember you are comparing a Dual Core versus a Quad Core it is pretty impressive. The Rockchip in the Imagine 10 is a hell of a little chip.

So far I have tested GTA 3, GTA Vice City, Bards Tale, FF3, ShadowGun, and ShadowGun DeadZone all on max settings with no issues.

The display is sharp and bright with nice viewing angles. Movies look great. Netflix, Skype, both work. The Dual core is strong enough with the wifi to stream content that is not optimized for mobile, Like Amazon on Demand videos. Just set your browser to desktop mode.

Wifi is solid. Where it might lack a little over all strength, the connection is stable an solid. This can also be tweked.

I might have initially questioned going with 2 2MP cameras instead of 1 2MP and 1 5MP as a lot of other tablets are, but actually I have realized I am not going to be whipping out my 10 inch when ever I need to take a picture. I have a 7 and 5 for that. The 2 MP cameras both perform great in daylight, slightly better than average in lower light than most tablets I have used. An LED flash would have been nice, but actually I have a high lumen LED light meant for a ball cap that works nicely.

Cons

I don't have any real negative about the tablet so far. If anything I have been pleasantly surprised overall.

The only issue I have really had is HDMI out does not work on all of my TVs. Not sure why. I can't 100 % blame it on the tablet until I can figure out the cause.

I own over 14 Android tablets right now. I develop firmware and customizations for all of them. When I find a brand I like I tend to stick with it. I have been a fan of Skytex since my first Alpha due to their customer support and input into the MOD community.

In this case I have even broken my own rule a little comparing a Dual Core with a Quad, but I also had a point. to that. When you compare price, with the difference on performance, really the 10 shines a little brighter. I have seen the ST1012 retailing between $259 to $299 and the Excite from $399 to $459.

Not having Google Play is not a con with any tablet. Should you think so you need to read a little more before purchasing. There is no such thing as an Android tablet that is incompatible with Play, you just have to install it yourself which usually take all of 10 to 15 minutes.

Star rating? Since I can't give partials and the only issue I am having being the HDMI, I might go 4 and but I still can;t say the issue is on my end so 5. I have created and ICS and Jelly Bean custom ROM for the Imagine 10 already you can find on Slatedroid and TabletROMsSkytex Imagine 10, ST1012, 10.1-Inch, Android 4.0, upgrades to Android 4.1, 1280x800, Dual Core, 16GB, 1GB RAM, Bluetooth, HDMI, Micro-SD Slot, Extended Battery, Cameras
