Super Talent 32 GB CoreStore MV Netbook Solid State Drive (MLC) SR32C7MME Review

I use these Super Talent CoreStores on the mini PCIe of Intel D525MW motherboards with the Atom processor. For a low power consumption PC, not having a spinning hard drive is key and the CoreStore is a great fit. The Atom processor is not a powerhouse CPU and the CoreStore helps to overcome that CPU limitation with blazing fast "disk" IO. It's a perfect match, low power yet quick, and I've built 5 of these systems now. Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 both see the storage natively. You'll have to download the driver from Super Talent's website and load it for a Windows 7 or Server 2008 installation. I've installed on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and it wasn't easy. Unless you have the time and Linux knowledge, I'd recommend it only for Windows. No FreeBSD drivers.

This 32GB drive has only about 25GB useable, something to keep in mind. Go with the 64GB drive if you need the extra space.

Boot times are insanely fast even with the Atom processor. SATA2 is about 300MB/s theoretical and these CoreStore are rated for reads at 350MB/s ... AND because it is PCIe, there is no SATA controller to funnel through either. It's too bad there aren't more motherboards with these mini PCIe slots.

Would be nice if mounting screws were included. The mini PCIe mounting screws are tiny, difficult to find and I'm running out of old laptops to get them from.

This is an MLC model which is going to be fine for a home or small office build. Super Talent makes an SLC that performs faster writes and has much higher durability (and much more expensive). However, as with any SSD drive on the market, keep very good backups because SSD drive recovery is simply not affordable.
