Sony Bravia KDL-32BX310 32-Inch 720p 60Hz LCD HDTV Review

The point of this TV is to provide exceptional picture quality and a relatively decent form factor at an affordable price. In that respect this one meets and exceeds design specs.

What I love is the display quality: vivid colors and smooth action make every movie and program lifelike. The sound is also more than adequate, which is a plus because it's difficult to connect this TV to a lower end sound system. More about that below.

I've used this as a monitor and the display from a Windows XP laptop is usable, but not the same definition as a dedicated monitor. Of course what this lacks in that department it more than makes up in screen real estate. The connections on the side of the monitor are on the left as you face it and computers connect via a VGA cable for the video and a 3.5mm audio cable.

For connecting other devices this has a rich array of inputs:

- two HDMI ports (I have a Chromecast and Roku connected).
- is a component in section that uses 1/4 inch RCA jacks for video and audio that I use for a DVD player. This section also has two additional jacks for video in for composite.
- coaxial cable connector
- optical digital audio out
- USB (I use this to power the Chromecast)

The weaknesses are two, but were glaring enough for me to subtract a star. The biggest it there is no component out jacks to connect to a sound system via RCA jacks. Granted the digital audio out accomplishes this if you have a received or other sound system that has that port, but that defeats the purpose of having an inexpensive TV with superior picture quality. You could also use one of the HDMI ports for sound out if your sound system accepts that type of interface, but, again, that increases the overall cost if you go that route. It's better to invest the money in a higher end TV that does have simple audio out.

The second issue is if you want to mount this TV on a wall the mounting holes are non-standard. Most TVs use VESA ( Video Electronic Standards Association) hole patterns of 100 x 100 or 75 x 75 millimeters. The pattern on this TV is 200 x 300.

Problems aside, this is an excellent TV if you intend to use it as a table top and do not care about an external sound system (or own one with an HDMI or optical audio port.) If wall mounting and/or connecting this to your stereo are important factors this is not the TV for you.
