Lenovo ThinkPad SL410 2842F7U 14-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

First of all, Amazon shipped me a ThinkCenter desktop! Needless to say I was quite annoyed. After dealing with their customer service, I promptly received a return label for it, and the laptop was shipped with 2-day shipping. This was a Thursday after noon, and I didn't receive the thing until Tuesday the next week. First time I've had an incorrect shipment from Amazon since I've been shopping with them for the last 6-7 years. Well on to the review. At $600 for a ThinkPad with Windows 7 Pro - it's a damn good deal. I bought this for my wife for use at home. I removed some of the bloatware that came with it and installed MS Security Essentials. The power saver feature is great! I can supposedly get 4+ hrs out of the battery (based on the estimate on the battery indicator) although I've never used it for longer than an hour off the plug. I don't know if it's a Win7 feature, but if you mouse over minimized windows - it shows a small pop-up of the window. I love that, since we tend to have a few windows open at a time. Boot up time is ok - I've not timed it, but it feels like 60-90 seconds. I tend to Hibernate it most of the time. From hibernation, it starts up in less than 30 seconds. The build seems sturdy enough and compares ok with the last ThinkPad I used about 12 years ago. There is no latch to close the screen though. On the screen - depending on how you hold the machine, the screen tends to swing backward on its weight. It is unable to support it self at certain angles. This is not a problem (yet). I hope it doesn't become more free though! The screen is glossy, but I don't have too much glare issues indoors. I haven't tried it outside, or in brightly lit areas. I received the unit with only a DVD burner drive. I need to see if that drive can be swapped for a blu-ray drive, as the unit has an HDMI output - which is of no use unless I stream or download high def from the web is like never. The 14" screen is just barely ample. I did not want the SL510 withthe 15" screen as it would've been too heavy for the purpose. The screen is actually pretty short vertically - which annoys me since you have to scroll alot more to see more of a page. I personally prefer the ~4:3 aspect ratio (1280x1024?)of the older laptops. But all laptops are coming "widescreen" now so complaining about that is a waste of time. As far as performance goes, I haven't installed any other applications on it (besides Firefox) as yet. However, I don't foresee any issues. It only comes with 2GB of RAM - but that should be sufficient for the use intended, and can supposedly be expanded to 8GB if needed. We don't do pc gaming so I couldn't tell you about that. Wireless works fine around the house. All in all, so far I am very pleased.

Koenig Meyer 12150 Pro Laptop Stand Adjustable Laptop Stand and Mouse Rest Review

I bought this stand for shooting tethered for my laptop along side a tripod for portraits. When it came I was surprised on the quality & construction of the stand. It sets up under 10 seconds. The plate, knobs & legs are extremely well made. Its not inexpensive but you'll see why: There's another company that makes a laptop stand called Lizell Quickstand Plus which is about $20.00 less but it does not compare to the sturdiness and build quality of this one. This adjusts up to 4ft. high whereas the Lizell only goes up to 2.5 ft., It also has a mouse plate just under the main plate(the only stand that comes with one which I dont use) And last but not least - It's Made in Germany! When it comes to engineering no other country does it better.

Application Use: I found use for it in places I never imagined! Next to my bed as I'm laying down is the most common, kitchen, park, poolside, on location photo shoots, and just about anyhwere you can use your laptop (BTW, laptop pc's shouldn't be named Laptop anymore as most of us never use it on our laps or at least its difficult to use it on your lap unless your watching a movie but even then you can only do that for so long :)

For me it's worth every penny! As my laptop is now on it 80% of the time.

Nokia does the dumbest things, no doubt it gets screwed. It is the Rolls Royce of Netbooks. Great Industrial design, Very Sturdy, Beautiful looks, Great sound and Amazing Display. That's it, NOTHING POSITIVE any more.

NEGATIVES:

1) You have Windows starter 7 + 1 Gb (FIXED RAM on Board. You cannot expand it). How in the world this configuration works. Windows 7 requires minimum 2 Gb RAM. Else Load it with XP. This makes this netbook DEAD slow when multiple applications running.

2) When tried to load XP, extra hardware features this Netbook has FAILS. GPS doesn't works. Not sure abt 3G nor hard disk protection software.

3) When you spend almost 500$ on Netbook, you have a GPS just tells where u are located. It can't route NOR give directions. You got to TWEAK and struggle to make it running. Why in the world anybody require a GPS JUST to tell you where u are located. Crazy thought. No GPS drivers for XP and it fails to work when you downgrade to XP from Win7

Gefen TV High-Def Personal Video Rec Review

I owned the Gefen HD-PVR for several months. For the price is an absolute piece of junk.

For starters the audio sync is off by a fraction of a second, creating an obvious discrepancy that will be noticeable for many viewers. Second, the stereo-only audio recording results in harsh, brittle audio that does not accurately reproduce the stream of whatever content you happen to be recording. The internal hard drive is small and the transport-to-PC via SD/SDHC cards doesn't work quite properly either. Sure, the picture quality is fine, but for the $800 and up that this retails for, everything about it ought to work...and it doesn't. I wouldn't hold your breath on the firmware front either, as each update that came out when I owned the device added glitchy aspects that weren't there before. One update disallowed 720p/1080i recording to a SD card, another allowed it. One other update re-allowed it, but wouldn't let you transfer a hard-drive recording to the PC card. And on and on it went.

A much better, more cost efficient, and much more satisfying device is the Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR. For about $200 you get a working unit that hooks up to your PC, records in 5.1 audio (that's in sync!), records in the same H264 quality, but gives you a lot more options, a lot more flexibility to fine-tune your recordings, burn to a dual-layer DVD+R for AVCHD compatability, and such.

$800 for this non-working unit or $200 for something that does, and does it better? It's a no-brainer.
