Casio Green Slim Line Projector (XJ-A235U) Review

I purchased directly from Abes of Maine, because at the time there was a $30 difference between their direct price and their Amazon price. Let me just get this out of the way: I hate the phone call to up-sell me on things I don't need.

Now, this is a great projector. I might get another, because it is so portable and flexible. I'm using it for "dive-in-movies" at the pool. The extra lumens allow me to start the movies a little earlier than my Sanyo PLV-Z2000. The picture compares favorably to the Sanyo with two exceptions: there is a fairly pronounced color-wheel (rainbow) effect, and there is also a "screen-door" effect, both due to the DLP technology. I was surprised by the color-wheel effect, because I thought the independent light sources would eliminate the need for a color-wheel. Perhaps it is caused by some other method of alternating the colors. There are three power/brightness modes: 'Save', 'Eco', and 'Off'. The 'Save' mode is the quietest, but it's a bit dim for me. The 'Eco' mode is nearly as bright as the 'Off' mode, but much quieter.

It's not quite instant ON. The projector turns off instantly - which is awesome - but, it takes time to display an image from a source. The light comes on instantly, and displays the Casio logo, but won't display source material for about 30 seconds.

It plays videos directly from the USB port (they just need to be MJPEG/ADPCM AVIs). You can even stream a computer monitor directly to the wireless adapter. Which means you can stream videos to the projector - which is a pretty handy way of eliminating extra cords pool-side. It will drop frames if there is any interference with the wireless signal.

Having just replaced the bulb in my Sanyo (which lasted over 6000 hours), I really like the idea that this hybrid light source could go for 15 years, or more.

The size and flexibility easily outweigh any negatives of this projector. I could easily replace an older TV with another one of these projectors.

UPDATED 07/02/2013 - I bought two more from this series; XJ-A140 and XJ-A241. The Sanyo projector suffered a burn-out of the blue LCD panel, so I replaced it with one of these projectors. The XJ-A140 lost three pixels from the DLP chip. They all went within about 72 hours. It hasn't lost any more, but I have a bad feeling about it.
