I must confess, I bought this product because I was intrigued by the "HeatShift" cooling pad. The pad is filled with granules of some substance that turns gel-like when sufficient heat has been absorbed. I'm guessing the concept behind the cooling pad is that the substance inside has a high heat capacity, so it just whisks heat away from the laptop mostly via conduction. There are shallow "airflow channels" (hence the bumpy look) all over the top surface of the pad to accommodate the cooling fans typically found on the bottom of laptops.

My theory is that once the granules of mystery material inside the pad have turned to jelly, the "airflow channels" are no longer as deep as they were when the material was in granule form (since granules will tend to have lots of little spaces between granules, and jelly won't).

Right or wrong, all I know is that I hear my laptop cooling fan kicking on far more often (and it sounds like it's straining) after 5+ hours with the HeatShift pad than with the ultra-cheapie Handstands Cool Lift Portable Notebook Cooling Pad 22100.

Granted, this pad works much better than I thought it would, given its lack of electricity and slim, travel-friendly profile.

The memory foam of the bag was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting something along the lines of the usual wetsuit material (neoprene), but this stuff's thicker and feels more shock-absorbent. The hard plastic casing on the handles is a nice touch, too. It would have been nice if there'd been one or two smaller pockets inside the bag in addition to the one large one.

I was a little dismayed by how heavy the bag + cooling pad were together. They feel like they're about 3 lbs.

The bag gets 4 stars and the pad gets 3. I do feel it is overpriced for what it is, hence 3 stars overall.
